Nearly every U.S. state has filed a lawsuit against Purdue Pharma, claiming the pharmaceutical company’s painkiller, OxyContin, has played a major role in the nation’s opioid epidemic.
Earlier this year, the state of Oklahoma settled its lawsuit with Purdue Pharma for $270 million. One of the newer lawsuits, California’s, claims – much like the other cases against Purdue – that the former chairman and president Richard Sackler knowingly encouraged the widespread distribution and use of OxyContin, despite being aware of the drug’s high addiction rate.
Purdue says the claims are misleading and it will defend itself against them.
